Do you feel stuck after a setback in your career? To rebound from career adversity, shift from a victim mindset to an empowerment mindset.
Sometimes, we experience misfortunes that are not a direct cause of our actions. An example could be a layoff due to economic changes, a betrayal, or being scape-gloated for someone else’s misdeeds. Likely, we can also identify choices that put us in a vulnerable situation or where we are experiencing the consequences of our own decisions. While we may have been a victim of ourselves or someone else, the key is to avoid the victim mindset trap.
Setbacks can trigger an unwarranted expression of negative emotions as we seek to assign blame. We may even recruit others to our cause to reinforce victimhood by entangling them in our drama. Hence, we remain stuck in the past, find unhealthy ways to deal with our emotions, and even scheme ways to enact vengeance on others. Rather than taking steps to improve ourselves, we either wait to be rescued or remain in an unresolved narrative of disempowerment.
In contrast, an empowerment mindset orients us to learning, creating solutions, and personal growth. We learn from our experiences, take personal responsibility, and tap into resources to overcome obstacles. We see ourselves as the primary cause of our outcomes and pursue meaningful goals and dreams. We expend energy becoming the best version of ourselves. Our script resolves into a hero narrative where we overcome and move forward.
Empowered people take action to move forward toward a new reality. The Apostle Paul expressed this mindset well, “…but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal….” Philippians 3:13-13 NRSV.
How does one shift from a victim to an empowerment mindset? An empowerment coach can help identify and clear out limiting beliefs and emotional baggage perpetuating a victim mindset. Then, a coach can draw out one’s core values and help identify the positive action steps to achieve the next set of career goals.
